uncomfortable buildup

This is the least elegant thing anybody has ever written about art. But sometimes, having the need to expel creative energy is like having to take a shit.

No really. You can’t get comfortable. You keep squirming around. …you spend a whole morning being fidgety, bouncing about unable to focus. Because there’s this thing you gotta get out. And you just can’t feel relaxed until you do.

But you know how it is. It doesn’t just happen when you need it to. You gotta wait for the magical time. And once you’re good, you’re good. I won’t go into more detail, because I think you’re tracking with me here.

I think it was Byron who said “If you want to connect emotionally with an audience on a subject not universally experienced, you must relate it to a bodily function which is, indeed, universally experienced.”¹

So anyway, go easy on frustrated artists. They’re perpetually experiencing constipation.

Here was my creative release today. Doesn’t look like much, but boy did I feel better afterwards.

¹Don’t be an idiot, Byron never said that.
